I am going to write today about another fantastic beer from St. Peter's Brewery, their Cream Stout.

We had bought this beer together with the Honey Porter, but with the summer road trip we hadn't gotten around to drinking it until the other day.

This stout is dark brown with a few reddish undertones. Its foam is cream colored, yet almost non existent.

Its smell is dominated by sweetness, with a slight bit of roasted in there as well. The first smells that come out are those of caramel or molasses, in keeping with the very malty character.

However, this is soon complemented by a certain roasted feel and the creaminess that gives the beer its name, all of which makes you think of chocolate. Mouthwatering.

The taste, like the smell before it, is also filled with chocolate. A creamy sweet chocolate that makes you think of a milk chocolate that has melted in your mouth, with all of its rich and sweet denseness.

The caramel is also still there, although slightly overpowered by the creamy chocolate which dominates the sweet beginning this beer has in your mouth. I say the sweet beginning, because this Cream Stout evolves in your mouth, going from purely sweet, to a mix of bitter and sweet, and ending up purely bitter. This bitterness and the roasted malts then give rise to a dark coffee like taste and a dry finish, not excessive, but definitely enough to make you crave more of the creamy chocolate sweetness your mouth had so far enjoyed.

Call me old fashioned, but in the face of creamy chocolate and caramel I can't help but think of vanilla ice cream as the perfect pairing. Maybe it's a remnant from the chocolate and vanilla cones of my childhood, or maybe it's just a reflex to avoid masking this beer's flavor too much. In any case, picture all the things that go well with chocolate, because any of those will do with this sweet heavenly beer.
